Types of interpreting
Unlike translation, which involves transferring written texts into another language, interpreting is all about the spoken word. We can advise you on what type of interpreting is best for your event. Depending on your chosen setting, these are the options:
Simultaneous
Simultaneous interpreting involves translating speech from one language to another with just a few seconds’ delay. Simultaneous interpreters work in teams of at least two in a soundproof environment, usually an interpreting booth. This “real-time” mode of interpreting is ideal for conferences and high-level meetings, to mention but two examples. Because of the high cognitive load involved in this mode, the interpreters switch every half hour or so.
Consecutive
Consecutive interpreting is suitable for situations that are more formal in nature or to which one may wish to lend more gravitas, such as dinner speeches or press conferences. Here, we stand near the speaker on the stage (or at the conference table) and interpret what is said into the other language section by section. This requires a strong short-term memory, aided with a special note-taking technique. Opting for consecutive means one should allow for around twice the time needed for simultaneous.
As consecutive interpreting is done under more challenging circumstances, a surcharge usually applies.
Other interpreting modes besides simultaneous and consecutive include liaison, escort and whispering interpretation.
